I’ve enjoyed chatting with Matthew Liberty on Google+ and Twitter. I believe I first connected with him around our shared interest in wine–he and his wife co-author the Hoot’n Annie blog. Yesterday I had a chance to hear more about his approach in the post “An Adventure of Experiments“. I woke up this morning ready to jump online and give his article the Post of the Week (POTW) shout-out!
I’ve long been a believer in the value of learning through experience. As much as I enjoy the world of ideas, I get restless if an idea is not soon put into action. The real test of a concept comes through experimentation. Before reading Matt’s post yesterday, I’d been looking for a John Dewey quote on the value of experience, for a post I was writing. I found this Dewey nugget: “Education is a process of living and not a preparation for future living“.
Packing more experiments into a lifetime is crucial to learning and success, in my estimation. Such thoughts were kicking around in my mind when reading An Adventure of Experiments, so it really resonated. I love the way Matt turns around the question, “Are you doing what you were trained to do?” and passionately describes how his success and learning has come through jumping in and figuring things out.
I don’t want to give too much of Matt’s article away, you should read it for yourself. I will conclude by saying I expect to see him turning out some pretty awesome paintings soon!
Post of the Week is a regular Saturday feature of this blog, highlighting something I read recently that stood out and got me thinking. Check out past POTWs here.
